The SWI-Prolog Organization
Stichting is the Dutch legal term for a foundation, a non-profit organisation. The SWI-Prolog foundation has been founded in Juli 2002, providing a legal base for managing the project. Translated from the legal document, its goal is
Support the use of the Prolog programming language in education and business by maintaining, developing and distributing the Free Software implementation of this language called `SWI-Prolog'.
The foundation collects donations and uses this to allow the main developer to spend more time on SWI-Prolog development and support as well as to hire or financially support people to do important things that do not get done otherwise.
The legal form `stichting' guarantees that every penning earned is spent on the goals of the organisation: on developing and spreading SWI-Prolog.
The board of the foundation is formed by Jan Wielemaker (chair), Anja van der Hulst (treasurer and secretary) and Prof. Bob Wielinga.
Large parts of SWI-Prolog and its libraries are owned by the University of Amsterdam as most of the work has been carried out while fulltime employed there. Growing parts of the system and libraries are owned by other authors and contributors. The entire system is licensed under a combination of the LGPL and GPL with an additional note that allows for using the system with both free and proprietary software components. The license and distributed ownership guarantees this situation cannot be changed.
